Looking from an overall perspective, it is readily apparent that the figures for urban populations in all regions witnessed upward trends from 1950 to 2007 and are predicted to continue their growth until 2050. North America has registered the highest figure for urban residents throughout the period, while the opposite has been the case for Africa.
In 1950, the data for urban citizens in North America was greatest at 64%, followed closely by Oceania, Europe, and Latin America/Caribbean at 62%, 51%, and 42%, respectively. Africa’s figure was least notable at 15%, slightly lower than Asia’s at 17%. Over the following 57 years, the statistics for individuals residing in urban areas in North America, Oceania, Europe, and Latin America/Caribbean experienced upward trajectories, rising to 79%, 71%, 72%, and 76%, for each. Similarly, Africa and Asia’s percentages both doubled, with the former reaching 37% and the latter 41%.
In 2050, North America, Oceania, Europe, and Latin America/Caribbean’s figures for urban populations are projected to continue rising to 90%, 76%, 84%, and 89%, in turn. Africa and Asia also displayed significant growth in their data points, with Africa increasing to 62% and the Asia to 66%.
