Complete university education is thought by some to be the best way to get a good job. On the other hand, other people think that getting experience and developing soft skills is more important.
Discuss both views and give your opinion.
Some believe that a university qualification is indispensable in finding well-paid jobs, while others value pragmatic experience and soft skills more in this regard. In my opinion, despite university degrees being an effective tool for candidate assessment and a minimum requirement in certain jobs, experience and soft skills still play a far more crucial role in employment.
Proponents of traditional education argue its irreplaceability in few specific professions. Particular occupations ranging from doctors to teachers require at least a bachelor degree to gain credibility and show that they have in-depth knowledge concerning their expertise. A pertinent example of this is that hospitals and universities always demand medical staff and lecturers to have completed tertiary education. A university qualification also acts as a proof for the prospective applicants’ breadth of knowledge in their respective sectors. Companies can make more informed decisions in hiring new employees through this degree, and be able to save time and cut costs as a result. Most employers use university qualifications to determine potential applicants’ capabilities and hire most suitable workers for positions being recruited.
On the other hand, communication skills can significantly increase ones’ probability of being employed. Candidates who can confidently and fluently convey their ideas usually make a good impression on recruiters as this ability is a valuable asset to an organization. Companies generally prioritize applicants showing confidence in their speech instead of those who appear anxious. Experienced candidates can also adjust themselves quickly to a new working environment. Individuals with hands-on experience from prior jobs can engender a higher level of productivity, thus naturally attracting the attention of hiring managers. There is anecdotal evidence that those who have been trained in previous jobs are highly valued as they often undergo a much shorter probationary period.
In conclusion, even though a university degree can be used to accurately evaluate prospects, and is compulsory for professionals, individuals demonstrating communication skills and preceding work experience have a stronger likelihood to be selected.
