Nowadays, many people are choosing to socialize online rather than face to face. Is this a positive or negative development?
Online socialization has become increasingly popular in recent years and largely replaced in-person communication. Although this propensity facilitates global communication and creates more opportunities to make new friends, the risks related to scams and poorer relationship quality makes this an overall negative development.
Proponents of this trend believe the internet is an ideal place to establish new relationships. There is a broad range of online groups containing members with the same hobbies, thus making it easier to link individuals that share similar interests and experiences together. Online social media platforms ranging from Facebook to Instagram both have travel groups attracting thousands of users to interact with one another regarding potential tourist attractions globally and many ultimately become long-lasting friends as a result. Online socialization also allows friends and family members to stay connected. Despite being far apart in terms of geographical distances, migrants and overseas students can still stay in touch with others at home through sending messages or video calling.
However, online users generally are under a constant threat of being scammed. Scammers will try to approach unsuspecting victims through the use of highly sophisticated criminal means including faking their identities or phishing. Recent research and surveys indicate that not only older users got their money stolen, but also an increasing number of young users. An extended period of only socializing online can also hurt relationships. Talking and chatting online hinders meaningful and deep conversations that would have otherwise been made in the real world, leading to much less intimate relationships. There is anecdotal evidence that friends who do not often go out in places such as restaurants or coffee shops will become distant over time.
In conclusion, even though online socialization connects people together, the users of these platforms are likely to experience worsening relationships and a high incidence of scams, which is negative on the whole.
