Cities in the future

View of a polluted river reflecting factory emissions under a clear sky in India.

Some people believe that in the future, most cities will become unlivable due to pollution and overcrowding. Others think technological innovation will solve these problems.

Discuss both sides and give your own opinion.

Some argue that individuals cannot live in the majority of urban areas in the future because of contamination and overpopulation, while others contend that technology provides the solution to these problems. In my opinion,  although polluted air and overly populous cities can make life here less comfortable, the development of artificial intelligence will eventually allow humans to surmount all of  these problems.

On the one hand, some individuals believe that the rising levels of pollution can predispose urban dwellers to certain severe health conditions. Vehicles and construction sites emit large amounts of carbon dioxide and dust particles, which lead to higher risks of respiratory diseases. For example, Beijing is reported to have alarmingly high levels of air pollution and therefore can lead to residents developing lung problems and the exacerbation of pre-existing medical conditions such as asthma. Overpopulated cities also result in rising living costs. This is the typical experience for young people living in cities worldwide, as they are unlikely to be able to buy a house relying solely on their monthly paycheck.

However, technological advancements can lead to the rapid development of artificial general intelligence, thus creating the necessary measures to make cities liveable.  Experts suggest that the rapid progress of AI models could soon enable solutions to most human problems, extending far beyond urban issues. For instance, AI is now capable of analyzing huge data sets, generating hypotheses and conducting experiments to test them inside sophisticated simulations, resulting in significant scientific breakthroughs.  Modern technologies such as smog towers have also been built in highly polluted areas to create more clean air. A pertinent example of this can be seen in Delhi, where such towers claim to filter large volumes of carbon dioxide daily.

In conclusion,  although the rapidly expanding population in cities has contributed to lower quality of life, future technology is likely to alleviate these challenges and make urban living more sustainable.
