Nowadays, many parents work abroad and take their families with them. Do the benefits of this trend for families outweigh the drawbacks?
At present, a large number of parents seek employment opportunities overseas and then bring their families with them. In my opinion, although migration can lead to improved living standards, this outcome is likely to be unrealistic for the majority of migrants as migrants tend to receive unfair treatment, rendering this propensity decidedly negative overall.
Proponents of relocating to another country typically point to the potential for enhanced living standards. Individuals from less developed countries can travel to developed ones and gain access to higher potential earnings, better healthcare plans, and educational opportunities, not only increasing their quality of life but also their children. For example, Mexicans who legally migrate to the US are likely to achieve higher minimum wages, greater educational outcomes for their children, and health insurance when they become permanent residents. Furthermore, some families might even be able to escape from war-torn zones, live, and thrive in a politically stable country where their future is not threatened. For instance, Ukrainians who managed to settle in another country before the Russian invasion can have a safe place to work, study, and grow instead of worrying about being bombed.
However, I believe that only a small proportion of migrants can reap the aforementioned benefits, while most are likely to suffer. Recent statistics indicate that the majority of
migrants globally work in low-income, labor-intensive jobs and are therefore particularly vulnerable to unfair treatment. Certain Gulf countries implement policies that allow local businesses to exploit migrant workers through employer-sponsored visa systems and exemptions from labor protection laws. As a result, these workers are forced to remain in these countries for excessively long periods in these nations as they are trapped in a vicious cycle of repaying debts deliberately imposed on them by their employers. Such unethical practices can be most evidently observed in Dubai, where construction workers are forced to live in cramped accommodation and work excessive hours without adequate compensation and proper safety protocols, a situation that closely resembles modern-day slavery rather than genuine employment.
In conclusion, although migrants might be able to achieve higher living standards in more developed nations, this reality is unlikely for most of them due to unfavorable working conditions, which far outweigh the perceived benefits. Individuals should consider their options carefully before making this life-altering decision.
