The diagram shows the design of a modern landfill for household waste
The diagram illustrates how a contemporary landfill is designed for the disposal of domestic waste.
Looking from an overall perspective, it is readily apparent that the process of forming a landfill consists of three main stages. These include excavation, the installation of a drainage system, and a clay covering.
Initially, an artificial hole is dug in the natural rock just above the underground water channel. In the next step of construction, a composite liner involving clay and a synthetic substance is added while drainage pipes are installed in a grid pattern alongside with a drainage tank.
In the following stage, household waste is dumped into the hole, with the leachate being filtered and channeled away through the drains previously incorporated. Finally, when the waste gradually undergoes decomposition, a clay cap is positioned on top of the hole. The resultant gas emissions during this process will be transferred away through pipes to be utilized for other purposes.
