While some people claim that advertising drives growth, others suggest it harms society by making individuals feel unhappy with themselves and their belongings.

Discuss both views and give your own opinion 

Many feel that advertisements stimulate economic development, while others argue that they engender a sense of dissatisfaction among individuals in a given society. In my opinion, although regular  exposure to adverts can lead to feelings of inadequacy, the prevalence of advertising accelerates economic progress, which is unequivocally a net positive for society.  

Detractors of advertising argue that it promotes materialism, fueling psychosocial widespread discontentment. Adverts typically covertly convey the message that true happiness is achieved through materialistic possessions, creating a desire for consumption instead of a feeling of satisfaction with one’s current lifestyle. Due to the sheer number of adverts on social media, young individuals in particular are now more likely to make comparisons, appraise others based on their wealth, and as a result possess a greater propensity to  feel envious and dissatisfied with their own situation, even when they are financially well-off. This perceived inadequacy can also lead individuals to make impulsive purchases, potentially placing them at financial risk. The drawback of a consumerism culture is evident in a nation such as Korea, where many young individuals incur credit card debt just to buy a luxurious car or a designer handbag and temporarily satisfy a shallow need for social recognition.  

However, advertising can contribute significantly to economic development as it encourages spending. Online adverts generally utilize algorithms to target a specific audience, allowing for vastly superior allocation of marketing funds compared to past methods. As a result, these companies may be able to open additional branches or increase production and distribution, directly engendering new employment opportunities in the process. Such expansion not only leads to lower unemployment rates, but also generates tax revenue for the government, which can then be allocated towards initiatives that further fuel economic growth and a variety of services that serve the public good. For example, advertising campaigns by international corporations such as Apple generate profits reaching hundreds of billions of dollars, contributing to maintaining the US’ position as one of the economic powerhouses of the world.  

In conclusion, although advertising can provoke feelings of insecurity, the economic benefits concomitant with this activity outweigh any perceived drawbacks. All companies should invest more in advertising to maximize their profits.
