ANGER IN SOCIETY

There is more and more outrage and anger common in society today.

Why is this?

Is this a positive or a negative development?

Some feel that outrage and indignation has become increasingly prevalent in the modern world. This phenomenon results from the pervasiveness of negative news online and is largely positive as anger is necessary for positive societal change

The main reason why the average citizen is typically angrier is because of online news. The vast majority of media outlets now focus on delivering shocking and distressing reports to exploit human psychology and drive traffic. Pertinent examples of this can be seen on Facebook and Twitter, where most news outlets prioritize accidents, conflicts and major scandals over stories that spread positivity. News companies are too interested in news that make people upset and therefore more likely to spread poorly vetted news. The January 6 resurrection would not have occurred if the public had not been misinformed about the electoral results.

Nevertheless, widespread anger is a catalyst for a progressive society. This has been proven to be true throughout history as if it had not been for mass protests and the public voicing their opinions, social inequalities and injustices committed against disadvantaged groups would not have been addressed. For instance, the women’s suffrage movement in the US has successfully led to legislators making amendments to the constitution and allowing women to have a right to vote. This principle applies not only to historical events but also to positive changes in today’s world. One illustrative example of this would be rallies from climate activists that have motivated governments globally to implement stringent policies for reducing emissions and increasing the use of solar panels and wind turbines to slow global warming.

In conclusion, increasing levels of outrage in society are attributable to the prevalence of negative online news coverage. However, this tendency is generally positive as it engenders progressive tendencies in society. Resentment should therefore not be viewed as negative irrespective of the context
