The chart illustrates the percentages of weekly income spent by households in the years 1968 and 2018.
Looking from an overall perspective, it is readily apparent that the most money was spent on food in 1968, while in 2018, leisure’s proportion was the highest. The categories ranging from food, fuel and power, clothing and footwear to personal goods witnessed declines, whereas the remainder saw increases, with the exception of household goods staying unchanged.
In 1968, families allocated most of their budget towards food, which was significantly greater than the remaining categories, contributing 35% on average. Weekly spending on the others was relatively similar, registering in the range from 5% to 10%, with fuel and power expenses being the least considerable at approximately 6%.
In 2018, spending patterns displayed a much clearer divergence. Food’s figure experienced a dramatic decline to about 17%, which was surpassed by housing and leisure’s percentages representing around 19% and 22% respectively. Both fuel and power, and personal goods declined to roughly 4% while clothing and footwear reduced by a half to 5%. Transport showed a substantial growth from about 8% to 14%, whereas household goods remained stable at around 7%.
