Looking from an overall perspective, it is readily apparent that there were more individuals affected by noise at all times in both areas in question, with those impacted by traffic noise being most considerable. Moreover, generally more complaints were filed in cities concerning all kinds of noise during both the day and at night.
Looking first of all at urban regions, traffic noise was most prevalent, with 64 million and 48 million residents affected during the day and night, in turn. The number of rural residents impacted were significantly lower, representing 34 million during daytime and 24 million during nighttime. Trains were the second most common source of noise in both areas, afflicting 10 million in the day and 8 million people at night in cities. In terms of the figures in the countryside, there were fewer residents affected by noise from trains, at 8 million and 6 million during the day and at night, for each.
Noise levels from aircraft were much less substantial, resulting in a total of 4 million and 1 million complaints in the day and at night, respectively. Rural figures were only half as high during the day, while nighttime’s data was exactly similar.
