The maps below show a beachfront area in Australia in 1950 and the same area today.
The maps illustrate how a beachfront area has transformed since 1950. Looking from an overall perspective, it is readily apparent that the road network has become more extensive, with the addition of a new road stretching to the beach and a car park. The area has also become more commercial, marked by the emergence of two surf clubs and a restaurant.
Looking first of all at the northern part of the beachfront area, a large children’s playground used to occupy the site, but now, it has been replaced by a smaller car park. The nearby picnic spot and pavilion have remained unchanged to the present day, while a car park further east has been expanded. The road that formerly ended at this car park has since been extended southwards all the way to the beach.
Concerning the surrounding areas of the beach, no alterations were made to the 25-meter pool on one side of the shore, whereas the one on the opposite side has been enlarged to 50 meters. Adjacent to the latter, a surf club and a restaurant have been constructed. In the southeastern region of the map, the lighthouse has remained untouched, while a second surf club has been established. In 1950, the sandy beach was not significantly encroached upon by the sea; however, the sea has since extended further inland.
