Some individuals argue that the government should make more budgetary allocation towards teaching scientific subjects at school than others. In my opinion, although placing great emphasis on the STEM discipline is highly pragmatic from an economic standpoint, other subjects remain equally important and therefore deserve similar funding.
On the one hand, proponents of prioritizing investments in scientific studies typically point to their practicality. Higher quality courses on subjects such as mathematics, physics, and chemistry can better prepare students for a variety of future jobs needed in a thriving economy, ranging from accountants and business analysts to programmers. A pertinent example that highlights the importance of science can be observed in the US, where the economic success is largely attributable to an educational system that greatly invests in teaching science. Scientific subjects also lay a solid foundation for major medical breakthroughs. For example, as scientific research takes precedence over other fields in the US, groundbreaking cancer treatments such as chemotherapy have been devised, extending life expectancy and contributing positively to humanity on the whole.
However, despite the economic benefits that teaching science brings, I believe that other subjects are just as crucial and should receive equal treatment. Subjects such as literature can provide students deep insights into their own cultural identity and traditions, thus engendering a sense of community. For instance, many Vietnamese poems and prose emphasize the importance of unity and patriotism, which can improve social cohesion and collaboration. A greater comprehension of the humanities also helps individuals make future predictions and potentially avoid past mistakes. For example, individuals can look at historical events to understand the causes of wars and conflicts, thereby taking precautions and minimizing the risks of future occurrences.
In conclusion, despite an increase in economic output associated with investing more in teaching science, I would contend that the humanities are essential in promoting social cohesion and peace keeping, and therefore should be funded equally. To ensure that a given society can grow sustainably, the government should give equal priority to both the humanities and the sciences.
