The graph below shows the three different kinds of emission sources (oil / coal / gas) of greenhouse gas in the UK.
The graph illustrates the amount of carbon emissions released from various types of fossil fuels in the UK over a period of twenty years starting from 1990. From an overall perspective, it is readily apparent that gas over time became by far the most major contributor to carbon emissions. The amount of carbon dioxide emitted from gas witnessed an upward trend throughout, while those of oil and coal declined, with the latter dropping more significantly.
In 1990, coal was responsible for the majority of carbon emissions, releasing a total of around 310 million tonnes, followed by oil at 260 million tonnes and gas at 220 million tonnes. After five years, the figure for carbon emissions from gas grew to surpass that of oil and reach 260 million tonnes. On the contrary, the amounts of carbon dioxide emitted from oil and coal both fell to 240 million and 270 million tonnes, respectively. From 1995 to 2000, gas’ number continued its trajectory, rising to hit precisely 300 million tonnes, whereas oil’s figure recovered partially and switched position with coal, representing 260 million and 250 million tonnes, for each.
Over the last ten years, all three fuel sources maintained their trends. Between 2000 and 2010, gas continued to release increasing levels of carbon emissions, reaching its peak of 320 million tonnes in the final year. In contrast, oil and coal’s data experienced gradual declines, with the former ending at 210 million tonnes and the latter 190 million tonnes.
