Many students find it is harder to study at university or college compared to when they were in grade school. Why is this? What are some possible solutions for this problem?
A large number of students find pursuing tertiary education more challenging in comparison with grade school. This is mainly a result of a seismic shift in teaching methods. However, this persistent problem can be addressed through universities introducing courses on study skills and additional workshops.
One major reason why university students struggle academically is because of a lack of supervision. In universities, lecturers are generally not required to monitor the behavior and performance of each student, which may translate to certain students being more prone to distractions, procrastination, and poor academic performances. The low academic results may also stem from the fact that there is little immediate consequence of failing a subject as students usually have an option to resit a given exam. For example, the vast majority of universities allow students to pay a fee and retake their final examinations at a later date, a policy that encourages procrastination and poor preparation. Nevertheless, these institutions can require students to attend a study skill course to prepare them better for university life. Such a dedicated mandatory course at the beginning of university studies could provide students with training for effective learning methodologies, strategies to utilize study materials, ways to collaborate with other students or seek help from lecturers, increasing their long-term chances of achieving sustained academic success. There is anecdotal evidence that students who have participated in study skill courses report feeling more familiarized with new learning environments and more well-equipped to study efficiently. Another related viable solution is for universities to organize workshops where senior students detail their personal study experiences.
