The diagram illustrates how a coastal region called Pentland was transformed over a period of 57 years starting from 1950. From an overall perspective, it is readily apparent that the area became more residential, with the emergence of accommodation, shops, a park, a cinema, a marina, and a swimming pool. It is also noteworthy that roads were expanded and rerouted, with the addition of a new road that stretched along the coastline all the way from the west to the east.
Looking first of all at the town in 1950, there were only large areas of grassland on both sides of the map. After 57 years, the area of grassland in the east was completely removed in favor of a row of small shops and single-family houses. Similarly, the grassland in the west was replaced by three large shops and a cinema. In 2007, a new and more extensive road network was constructed to separate the aforementioned locations from one another.
Concerning the northern region of the map, a marina was built in 2007 to increase accessibility to the town. From 1950 to 2007, to the east of the marina, a car park and the road leading to it were removed to make space for an apartment complex, while to the west, an industrial area was cleared to make room for a swimming pool and a multi-storey car park. Finally, a park was built on the previously unoccupied land in the northeastern area of the map.
