The charts compare the daily time, in minutes, spent by UK men and women on household and leisure activities in 2008.
The charts illustrate how many minutes on average both genders spent on doing household chores and relaxing in 2008. Looking from an overall perspective, it is readily apparent that men spent more time on all three leisure activities compared to women, except for reading. Women were mainly responsible for all domestic chores, while men devoted more time to only repair work.
Regarding the table, men spent a greater amount of time each day watching TV, videos and listening to the radio than women, accounting for 137 minutes and 118 minutes, respectively. Women allocated 19 minutes per day to reading, slightly higher than men’s figure at 18 minutes. In contrast, males spent four minutes longer than females engaging in sporting activities, with the former representing 15 minutes and the latter 11 minutes.
Concerning the bar chart, cooking and washing demanded the most time, with women spending more than twice as much time as men on these tasks at around 75 minutes each day, more than double the 28 minutes recorded for men. Similarly, the amount of time women spent on shopping, and washing clothes and ironing was greater than men, at 35 minutes and 30 minutes, for each, compared with only 24 minutes and 10 minutes for men. Finally, men spent nearly 20 minutes daily on repair work, while the data for women stood at about 9 minutes.
