Nowadays, more people travel abroad for tourism than ever before.
Do you think this is a positive or negative development?
At present, the number of individuals travelling overseas for tourism is at an unparalleled level. In my opinion, despite the detrimental impact on the environment, this propensity is decidedly positive as it contributes significantly to economic growth.
Detractors of the rise in foreign tourists typically point to the negative effects on the environment. An influx of tourists translates to higher levels of carbon dioxide emissions and littering, gradually degrading natural scenery and polluting the surrounding environment. A serious level of pollution is evident in Vietnamese coastal regions such as Sam Son, where a large amount of plastic waste has caused irreversible damage to the local marine life. A further problem associated with increased/excessive tourism is significantly higher costs of living. For instance, the sheer volume of foreigners travelling to Tokyo has resulted in the emergence of a higher density of hotels and rented apartments, inflating the housing market and therefore displacing local residents.
However, I would contend that the growth of the tourism industry is largely positive as it promotes widespread economic development. A rise in tourist activities creates new jobs and generates additional sources of income that would have otherwise not existed. A standout example of the economic benefits of tourism can be demonstrated in a nation such as Thailand, where the rise in revenue of various tourist-catering establishments ranging from hotels and restaurants to souvenir shops all contribute to improved national living standards. The tax revenue generated from such activities can later be allocated towards the improvement of long-term infrastructure projects such as motorways and subways. In a related example/corollary, thanks to tourism, a large number of rural regions in Thailand have witnessed the construction of new roads and bridges, and the revitalizing of various means of public transport.
In conclusion, although the development of tourism can pose existential threat to the environment, this trend leads to economic prosperity globally, which constitutes an unequivocally positive shift on the whole. The government should devise measures to mitigate the negative environmental impact while placing greater emphasis on attracting a greater frequency of tourists.
