Elderly people

Around the world, people are now living longer than ever before in the past. Some say an aging population creates problems for governments. Others believe there are benefits to society having more elderly people.

To what extent do the advantages of possessing an aging population outweigh the disadvantages?

Some argue that increased life expectancy globally poses decidedly serious problems for governments, while others claim that this seismic shift has positive implications. Although the proliferation of aging populations contributes to optimizing the workforce and building close-knit communities, the elderly can hinder economic progress and place pressure on the healthcare industry, making the development negative on the whole.

On the one hand, a positive concomitant with aging populations is community development. The elderly often become volunteers involved in local work as many are financially stable and have a more socially responsible attitude. For example, old people can visit local libraries and schools to read books for children or engage in socially-conscious projects like tutoring students from disadvantaged backgrounds in certain subjects. Another benefit to aging populations is a more productive labor force. The elderly typically possess considerable valuable experience in their respective fields, and consequently can train young workers to boost productivity, indirectly stimulating economic growth. Even today, there are online websites where  young individuals can seek older mentors to gain deeper insights into their line of work through texting and phone calls.

However, aging populations can present an economic burden. The elderly are more dependent on others, and therefore may require financial support from younger generations paying taxes. A pertinent example of this is in Japan, where a rapidly aging population has crippled economic growth as the labor market shrinks and young people must work harder to ensure adequate pensions for retirees. Relatedly, older population demographics also place great strain on healthcare providers. The elderly not only represent a significant allocation of health resources such as medicine and hospital beds but also require more medical attention as they are at a higher risk of developing diseases. A good example of this is that in many developed European nations, rising demand for scarce medical supplies has led to higher healthcare costs, rendering average citizens of all demographics unable to access proper treatment.

In conclusion, despite the connected communities and skilled workforce engendered from the contributions of aging populations,  the significant pressure placed on the economy and healthcare sector makes this demographic trend negative overall. Governments globally should be cognizant of these potential effects and devise policies to limit their negative impact.
