Employment patterns in New Zealand

The table below shows employment patterns for males and females in New Zealand in 1993 and 2003

The table illustrates the percentage of females and males employed in various industries in New Zealand between 1993 and 2003.

Looking from an overall perspective, it is readily apparent that only service and transport, and social services sectors recorded higher figures for female workers compared to men in both years in question. The most common sector for female workforce was service and transport in 1993 and 2003, while the majority of men worked in agriculture in 1993 and service and transport in 2003.

The percentage of females working in the service and transport industry was most significant at 53%, followed by manufacturing and social services at 25% and 13%, respectively. The data for female workers in these sectors were greater than their male counterparts, with men in service and transport accounting for only 22%, manufacturing just 16%, and social services a mere 5%. There were no female workers in the building industry, whereas the proportion of male labor force in this category stood at 12%. Regarding the agriculture and business sectors, the data for male workforce were significantly higher than that of females, with males constituting 38% and 7%, for each, and females representing 8% and 1%, in turn.

After a decade, the female employment statistics in the service and transport, agriculture and manufacturing sectors all declined to 36%, 6%, and 12%, for each. In contrast, the remaining sectors’ figures witnessed increases, with the percentage of females working in business rising most dramatically to 22%, building more slightly to 6%, and social services most negligibly to 18%. Looking next at the percentage of male workforce, all industries’ figures rose, with service and transport, business, manufacturing, and social services growing to 31%, 25%, 17%, and 9%, in turn. Building and agriculture were the only two exceptions, with the former dropping to 10% and the latter to 8%.
