In my opinion, although the establishment of pension plans can promote higher living standards, each individual should rely on themselves to become financially prepared for retirement.
On the one hand, proponents of the government paying pensions to the general population typically point to its role in raising living standards. By making budgetary allocation towards pension plans for retired workers, governments can make quality healthcare accessible to them and allow them to cover their daily living expenses. Such a well-developed welfare system is likely to encourage the general citizenry to stay in their countries to work and even attract foreign labor, promoting economic growth. The benefits of generous retirement policies can be most evidently observed in European countries, which not only retain domestic workers but also attract millions of migrant workers, thereby providing these nations with cheap labor and accelerating their economic progress. The diverse and affordable labor force can therefore fuel innovation in various industries such as science and technology, engendering significant breakthroughs that benefit mankind on the whole.
However, I believe that being too dependent on the government for one’s financial security can be risky. In countries with declining populations such as Japan and Korea, the pension system is likely to collapse in the future as there are no longer enough young people to work and support the elderly. A shortage in the labor force can place an enormous strain on the government and consequently the economy, resulting in policies that raise the retirement age for both men and women. A workforce mostly consisting of elderly individuals is less likely to innovate successfully, which hinders both economic and societal progress. A standout example of the population crisis is seen in Japan, where the citizens are increasingly encouraged to work until 70 years old, highlighting the unsustainability of relying entirely on state-funded pensions.
In conclusion, despite the potential for greater living standards, the risks associated with stated-funded pension plans mean that individuals should take responsibility for their financial future by saving and investing from an early age.
