Fixed donations

Everybody should donate a fixed amount of their income to support charity.

To what extent do you agree or disagree?

Many believe that everyone should allocate a part of their income towards charitable causes. In my opinion, although this practice would play an instrumental role in addressing poverty, it is unfeasible for many individuals and therefore should not be widely enforced

Those who argue in favor of fixed donations being required generally point to their implications for alleviating poverty. If every individual were to make monthly donations to charity, this would ensure a stable cash flow towards the provision of basic necessities for marginalized segments of society ranging from food and clean water to, most importantly, education. Ease of access to formal education can in turn engender potential career opportunities for those from disadvantaged backgrounds to improve their living standards and break the so-called cycle of poverty. Non-profit organizations like Save the Children have successfully evidenced this strategy by utilizing donations to make education more accessible in impoverished regions around the world

However, this altruistic proposal is largely impractical due to the diversity of financial situations in any given population sample. Some individuals have financial priorities such as debt payments, hospital fees and monthly rent that make regular charitable contributions detrimental to their own financial well-being. A pertinent example of this is that postgraduates in the US are typically burdened with substantial student loan debts that warrant prioritization. In fact, one can still support local charities by voluntarily donating time and skills. Simple acts of cleaning a neighborhood and donating blood are often more valuable and meaningful than cash contributions

In conclusion, despite the central importance of charitable donations for reducing poverty, it should remain as a voluntary practice due to the impracticality for a sizable segment of the population. Everyone should nonetheless be involved in charitable work in one form or another.
