Do the advantages of this development outweigh the disadvantages?
Homeschooling has become an increasingly popular option for certain households in particular nations. In my opinion, although this propensity allows for personalized learning and stronger bonds between parents and children, this approach is decidedly negative as home-schooled children gain significantly less exposure to experiences and opportunities in the real world.
One main advantage associated with this style of education is that children can receive individualized learning. Parents can provide children with one-on-one instruction, creating tailored-made learning materials that cater to their specific needs and therefore encourage them to reach their maximum potential. A standout example of this tangible benefit can be witnessed in cases involving dyslexic children as homeschooling allows them to study at a more comfortable pace with fewer distractions, which aids both short-term and long-term comprehension and memorization. In addition to these learning benefits, this method of education engenders a closer bond between parents and children. For example, parents who homeschool their children are more likely to gain greater insight into their unexpressed needs and emotions and thus will be better able to offer them adequate support in difficult times. However, the neglect of real life experiences and opportunities for socialization makes the aforementioned benefits insignificant in comparison. Children who are homeschooled have fewer chances to interact with their peers through activities such as playing team sports, potentially resulting in poorer social and communication skills. There is scientific evidence indicating that homeschooled children are more likely to later develop social anxieties and struggle to form and maintain new relationships. The lack of learning facilities available at home also translates to less involvement in practical experiments and projects in the sciences, largely limiting them from applying the knowledge in textbooks to real-world settings. Most schools have laboratories with equipment ranging from flasks and tubes to centrifuges and microscopes, all of which are likely to be inaccessible to homeschooled children.
In conclusion, despite the advantages concomitant with one-on-one education for children, the missed opportunities to socialize and engage in meaningful projects make homeschooling a less advantageous educational option on the whole. All parents should send children to schools and provide additional guidance at home to at least partially reap the benefits of both educational methodologies.
