Looking from an overall perspective, it is readily apparent that the figure for individuals living in owned accommodation witnessed an upward trend, while the opposite was true for rented accommodation. The total percentage of ownership had by far exceeded the reciprocal numbers for renting by the end of the period.
In 1918, the figure for rented accommodation was significantly higher than for home ownership accounting for around 77% compared to 23%, respectively. Both modes of living thereafter experienced inverse patterns, with renting dipping slightly to 69% in 1939 and remaining stable until 1953 and owning rising marginally to 31% and also holding steady steady over the next 14 years. From 1953 to 1971, both rented and owned accommodation continued opposing trajectories and converged at 50%.
Between 1971 and 2001, house ownership increased drastically, surpassing renting, and reaching a peak of nearly 70%, whereas rented accommodation declined gradually and hit a nadir of slightly over 30%. Over the following ten years of the period, owning and renting underwent opposite trends, with the former falling to about 64% and the latter growing to 36%.
