Looking from an overall perspective, it is readily apparent that Google recorded the highest percentage of searches on its platform throughout the period in question. The figure for internet searches on all engines witnessed downward trends between 2004 and 2010, with the exception of Google.
In November 2004, the total number of searches in the US was 4.5 billion, which then virtually quadrupled to 16 million after almost six years. Regarding the percentage of searches on different platforms in November 2004, Google’s figure was most significant at around 35%, slightly greater than Yahoo’s at 32%. By July 2007, Google and Yahoo’s statistics experienced opposite trajectories, with the former skyrocketing to 54% and the latter dipping to 25%. The percentage of searches on Google thereafter rose gradually to end at 67%, while that of Yahoo declined steadily to finish at 19%.
At the beginning of the period surveyed, the data for searches on Ask Jeeves was least considerable at 5%, marginally lower than AOL’s number at 9%. Both figures then overlapped over an extended period from July 2007 to April 2009, after which Ask Jeeves’ percentage finished the period at a marginally lower point compared to AOL, accounting for 3% and 4%, respectively. The proportion of searches on Microsoft initially stood at 15%, followed by a gradual decline to 9% in April 2009 before partially recovering to 11% in September 2010.
