Learning history

It is better to learn about history through films and video records than written documents.

To what extent do you agree or disagree?

Many feel that films and videos are superior media compared to written records for individuals to gain insight into history. In my opinion, although chronicles provide significantly more detailed accounts of historical events, movies are still a greater learning tool as they offer viewers a more engaging experience.

On the one hand, written documents can provide learners a more detailed and nuanced understanding of past events. Written content is typically a product of the combined efforts of distinguished historians and experts, who typically go to great lengths to explore aspects that are likely to be overlooked in films such as historical figures’ inner dialogues and the voices of marginalized communities, thus offering readers a more comprehensive perspective on the past. Such intricacies can be meticulously recorded in voluminous publications and cannot be feasibly included in the limited runtime of a film. Written records are also generally less skewed towards a specific political ideal and more likely to provide factual information. For instance, historical documentaries produced by US filmmakers on the war in Vietnam tend to portray US soldiers favorably to align with public perception instead of aiming for complete objectivity

However, despite these shortcomings, historical films provide a much more captivating experience for learners. In contrast to often tedious textbooks, watching historical documentaries allows viewers to meaningfully engage in history through the representation of lively characters and emotionally charged storylines. Anecdotal observations suggest that students tend to show greater interest in history and can better memorize historical events when they are presented through films instead of traditional texts. Films are also better at demonstrating the gruelling reality of battlefields. The intensity of war can be best illustrated in movies such as “Pearl Harbor”, where one of the deadliest battles during World War 2 is vividly portrayed with powerful visuals, emotional performances, and realistic sound effects, allowing viewers to grasp the chaos, fear, and human cost of a conflict in a way that written accounts cannot convey.

In conclusion, despite the level of detail and specificity that written documents can offer, historical films provide a more engaging and emotionally resonant medium for learning about the past, rendering them an overall more effective educational tool. Schools should install projectors where possible to show students historical movies and enhance their understanding and retention of historical lesson content.
