Longer weekend

The working week should be shorter and workers should have a longer weekend.

Do you agree or disagree?

Many feel that individuals should work fewer days in a week. In my opinion, despite the negative economic ramifications concomitant with extended weekends, this transition should take place to improve overall life quality for the general citizenry.

Detractors of longer weekends typically point to a projected decline in economic output. An additional day off would translate to significantly lower levels of production and reduced commercial activity, both of which could weaken the economic outlook for a given country. The potential for a negative financial impact could result in strikes and other labor disputes, leading to stagnation in business operations and the loss of economic activity. The unavailability of essential services on this free day could also cause practical inconveniences. This is particularly evident in time-sensitive cases such as where one needs to withdraw money from a bank or apply for a visa to travel abroad.

However, extended weekends could contribute significantly to greater mental well-being. One additional day off could allow for more time spent with family and friends to unwind and therefore improve one’s mental health. In reality, citizens living in countries with a seven-day work week on average, as is the case in parts of China, are more likely to be at risk of developing mental health issues to varying degrees. Workers who are in a healthier state of mind are also likely to produce a higher level of productivity. There is overwhelming evidence indicating that those allocating adequate time for relaxation tend to be more tolerant to stress and better able to stay focused on work for longer hours.

In conclusion, despite the negative financial repercussions associated with shortening the working week, this seismic shift would aid mental well-being and boost productivity and thus should be considered on a global scale by the relevant authorities. Governments and companies should seek to facilitate this  switch to enhance quality of life for the general populace.
