The graphs below show the percentage of men and women aged 60-64 who were employed in four countries in 1970 and 2000.
The graph illustrates how many males and females in the 60 to 64 age group were in employment in various countries over a period of thirty years beginning from 1970.
Looking from an overall perspective, it is readily apparent that the figures for both employed men and women aged from 60 to 64 declined in all countries over the period given, with the most notable drop recorded in Belgium for both genders. Across the four countries in question, more men were employed than women in both years, with the employment gap between the two sexes widened in favor of men after thirty years, except for in Japan.
In 1970, the smallest disparity between the data for senior males and females employed was registered in the US, accounting for 86% and 78%, respectively. In contrast, the most noticeable gap could be witnessed in Japan, with men in employment constituting 76%, considerably higher than women at 56%. The percentages for working men and women from the age of 60 to 64 in Indonesia were 84% and 65%, for each, both of which were higher than men (79%) and women’s figures (63%) in Belgium.
Over the following 30 years, the statistics for both men and women aged from 60 to 64 with a job fell most drastically in Belgium, with the former decreasing to 52% and the latter, more notably, to 8%. The same trend was true for the USA and Indonesia, with the figures for employed males in their respective country dipping to 78% and 74%, while employed females’ numbers declined to 45% and 50%, in turn. Lastly, Japan was the only country that underwent more substantial reductions in male (by 13%) workers compared to females (just 9%).
