Looking from an overall perspective, it is readily apparent that the figures for Olympic competitors of both genders witnessed upward trajectories throughout the period in question, with females’ rise being significantly more dramatic. The number of total participants also grew steadily during this period.
In 1924, there was a noticeable gap between the number of male and female athletes, with the former representing exactly 3,000 and the latter only around 100. The figure for men participating in the Olympics thereafter saw a considerable increase to approximately 4,500 in 1954, while there was a smaller rise to about 500 for women. In the next 30 years, males and females’ numbers continued their upward trends, reaching slightly over 5,000 and under 2,000 respectively. The disparity between two genders narrowed dramatically at the end of the period, recording roughly 5,800 male participants and nearly 5,000 of female counterparts.
Looking at the total number of Olympic contenders, this figure started at around 3,600 in 1924, rose gradually to 7,000 in 1984 before achieving a high of over 10,000 in the final year surveyed.
