Many residents decide to pursue insular lifestyles because of the rising popularity of online socialization. The presence of social media platforms greatly discourages in-person human interaction. Research and surveys have indicated that most people prefer to foster new relationships through social networking applications such as Facebook and Instagram, leading to neighbors becoming more physically isolated in the real world. Modern lifestyles also discourage face-to-face interaction among people due to the prevalence of various entertaining indoor activities. A good example of this would be the children’s games like tug of war and hopskotch being gradually replaced by screen time on various devices.
Local authorities should regularly organize social gatherings to promote social interaction with neighborhoods. These activities provide local residents the opportunity to find common ground and share memorable moments together, thereby possibly helping strangers to establish casual or even long-lasting relations. For instance, many governments in Asia stage musical performances or hold feasts for neighbors to bond with one another on special occasions like during mid-autumn festival and Lunar New Year. The government can further instill community interaction by installing gym equipment. There is anecdotal evidence that neighborhoods where sports facilities are available to the general citizenry are typically more likely to be close-knit communities.
In conclusion, the advent of the Internet and modern technology has resulted in alienation between neighbors and this trend can be countered with more communal events and sporting equipment installed in public areas. These proactive measures would contribute to a greater sense of connectedness in a given community.
