Packaged products

Some people think the manufacturers and shopping malls should sell fewer packaged products while others argue that people have the responsibility to buy products with less packaging.

Discuss both views and give your own opinion.

Many feel that producers and retail companies have the obligation to reduce packaging waste, while others argue that consumers should assume this responsibility. In my opinion, although businesses play an undeniably important role in limiting waste, consumers should be largely responsible for promoting this initiative. 

Those who support the mitigation of packaged products through institutions typically point to their leading role in the creation of this persistent problem. Businesses can actively switch from the use of certain harmful plastics to biodegradable, compostable or recyclable materials to minimize harmful waste. These efforts can be best illustrated in the food and beverage industry, where many restaurants in recent years have completely replaced plastic straws and disposable cutlery with paper and stainless steel items. These environmentally conscious companies often take further measures to drive consumer behavior towards sustainable living. A standout example of an additional positive action can be seen in Starbucks as customers receive free upsized upgrades if they bring their own cups. 

Advocates of consumer responsibility place great emphasis on their power to engender long-term shifts in business practices. Through consumers refusing to frequent stores with excessive packaging waste, companies can be either forced out of business or to change to more eco-friendly policies. International fashion brands like H&M and Zara have responded to public pressure by providing paper bags and incentivizing customers to employ their own. The impact of more environmentally friendly consumers also extends to the retail trade sector. For instance, many supermarkets in the UK have now utilized refill dispensing machines for various products ranging from shampoo and nuts to rice and carbonated drinks. In conclusion, although businesses can take definite steps to reduce the consumption of packaged  products, the consumer role in this endeavor is by far more significant. Consumers globally should support companies engaged with sustainable practices to curb packaging waste
