Parenting course

family, holding hands, parents

Caring for children is probably the most important job in any society. Because of this, all mothers and fathers should be required to take a course that prepares them to be good parents. To what extent do you agree or disagree with this view?

As taking care of children plays an instrumental role in any society, many feel that new mothers and fathers should be obligated to engage in a parenting course. In my opinion, although this option is financially unviable for certain households, the potential benefits for a child’s development more than justify the costs and exceptional circumstances.

Detractors of a compulsory parenting course typically argue that it is financially unfeasible for socioeconomically disadvantaged parents. Not all parents possess adequate financial resources for these courses and some could justly contend that this money could be better spent on more meaningful items that tangibly benefit children. These practical purchases could include strollers, cribs, and diapers, all of which contribute to greater levels of convenience and comfort for children and parents alike. There are also other more affordable and even free options for parents to learn from such as through books or their own parents. There are hundreds of books available that provide parents insights into child psychology and development, allowing them to offer their children scientifically-informed support and guidance.

However, undertaking a parenting course is significantly less time-consuming and more practical than the aforementioned options. A high-quality parenting course could potentially organize real-life tutorials and Q-&-A sessions to create a more interactive environment that ensures future parents can memorize and implement effectively what is taught. For example, a course on nutrition would help parents to make healthy and nutritious meals for their children, promoting both their long-term physical and mental well-being. Relatedly, a course on children’s psychological development would allow parents to resolve conflicts and manage periods such as puberty or key early developmental stages. This essential knowledge would contribute to shaping a well-rounded and responsible child, making the costs associated with a parenting course insignificant.

In conclusion, despite the fact that a parenting course might not be accessible to less affluent parents due to financial concerns, I would argue that such a  course should be mandatory for all parents because of its holistic benefits for a child. Parents should be open-minded to learn about new parenting methodologies to maximize their children’s potential.
