More people today put their personal and private information online (address, telephone number, credit card number) to do everyday activities such as banking, shopping, and socializing.
Is this a positive or negative development?
An increasing number of individuals now allow service providers to gain access to both their personal and private information such as location, phone number and banking details. In my opinion, although this practice can allow for greater levels of convenience, it poses serious security and financial risks, which is decidedly negative overall.
Proponents of providing personal details to service providers typically point to improved service quality. With users’ private information, these companies can facilitate transactions and create a more tailored-made experience for each individual. A pertinent example of this benefit can be seen with Grab, where users’ addresses and linked bank accounts are utilized to engender a seamless payment and product shipping system. Individuals can not only benefit from higher service quality at home but also when they travel to new locations. For example, when users allow Facebook and Tiktok to access their live locations on their vacations, these platforms can then recommend highly rated restaurants and tourist attractions to give them a better travelling experience.
However, the risks concomitant with such practice outweigh the perceived positives. When all users’ data is linked to these online service providers, hackers can find loop holes to penetrate these platforms to retrieve users’ passwords
and social security numbers, thereby faking their identities and stealing their money. For instance, there have been an overwhelming number of incidents where investors’ money in their cryptocurrency wallets are stolen due to their private information being compromised. Apart from the potential financial risks, these users are also susceptible to privacy violations, as their personal information can be collected and sold to third parties without their explicit consent. For example, users’ personal information regarding their lifestyle and daily activities can be collected and sold to insurance companies, which may then use such data to assess their risk profiles and charge certain individuals higher insurance premiums.
In conclusion, although giving service providers access to information can facilitate daily activities, I believe that this trend is unequivocally negative overall due to the elevated risks associated with one’s financial security.
