The first table below shows changes in the total population of New York City from 1800 to 2000. The second and third tables show changes in the population of the five districts of the city (Manhattan, Brooklyn, Bronx, Queens, Staten Island) over the same period.
The tables illustrate the demographic statistics for New York city as a whole and its five districts over a period of two centuries starting from 1800. From an overall perspective, it is readily apparent that there was a burst in total population living in New York city over the period in question, especially from 1900 to 2000. Population figures for Manhattan exceeded that of other districts from 1800 to 1900; however, this was no longer true in 2000.
Looking first at the population of New York city, the figure began at only 79,216 in 1800, followed by a significant growth to hit 3,437,202 after 100 years and a further increase to finish the period at slightly over 8,000,000. In comparison with the population data for Manhattan, its figure in the first year surveyed was only marginally lower, at 60,515, accounting for 76% of the total city population. This number thereafter surged to 1,850,093, which approximated to 54% of the entire New York city population, before dropping to 1,538,096 and only equating to 19%.
In terms of the population demographics of the remaining districts, the year 1800 recorded a relatively small figure of 18,701, making up 24% of the total city population. Notwithstanding this, the number soared to 1,587,109 in 1900, which was roughly 46% of the city population, prior to an even more dramatic rise to end the period at 6,471,089, accounting for the vast majority of New York city’s population at 81%.
