The diagram illustrates the steps involved in the production of electricity. Looking from an overall perspective, it is readily apparent that the process by which electricity is created is divided into a total of three stages. These include the heating of coal, the utilization of two separate turbine systems, and lastly the generation of electricity through transmission lines.
Initially, coal is extracted and delivered by a ramp to the furnace, where it is combined with oxygen. The coal is thereafter combusted inside the furnace, generating slag as a byproduct and raw syngas. The former product is discharged through one end, while the latter undergoes purification to remove unwanted substances such as carbon dioxide, mercury, and sulphur.
In the following stage, the purified gas can follow two different routes to create electricity. The first route is simpler, as it only involves the use of a gas turbine connected to a generator for electricity production. The remaining route also utilizes a gas turbine to manufacture hot exhaust gases, which are then transferred to a steam generator for heat recovery, releasing flue gases into the atmosphere in the process. The resultant steam is conveyed to a steam turbine connected to a generator to finally generate electricity.
