The graph illustrates how many trips each individual took on public transportation on average over a period of 110 years starting from 1900. From an overall perspective, it is readily apparent that public transport witnessed a spike in popularity in 1950, with Sydney accounting for the highest figure. There were significant fluctuations in the number of trips on public transport throughout, with all cities experiencing declines, except for Canberra.
Looking first at Sydney, this city reported the highest number of trips on public transport per person over the period in question. In 1900, the figure for trips stood at nearly 250, then surged to a peak of around 465 by 1920, before dipping considerably to 325 in 1940 and partially recovering to reach a high of 455 in 1950. Concerning the second half of the period, this figure plummeted to precisely 150 in 1980 and thereafter plateaued, finishing at roughly 148.
Adelaide and Hobart also recorded high volatility in terms of the number of trips on public transport. In the first year surveyed, Adelaide and Hobart’s data were 150 and 65, respectively, after which both soared, alternated rankings, and achieved their individual peaks of 320 and 420 in 1950. Over the last 60 years, Adelaide and Hobart’s statistics plunged to nearly identical figures of around 50, with the former being slightly higher.
Between 1900 and 1920, it is notable that no data were registered for Canberra. From 1920 to 1950, the number of trips taken per person on public transport in this city also skyrocketed to a peak of 200, prior to a marginal decrease to 50 in 1970. Over the following 40 years, this number partially rebounded to culminate at approximately 80, surpassing both Adelaide and Hobart’s figures.
