In my opinion, although the advent of robots can contribute to higher unemployment rates, this propensity is decidedly positive as it boosts productivity.
Detractors of robotics typically point to widespread unemployment. The creation of advanced robots is likely to translate to the elimination of certain low-skilled jobs, resulting in large-scale layoffs and economic instability. A standout example of the economic downsides can be demonstrated with industrial robots that replaced factory jobs such as wielding, painting, assembly, and quality inspection in the past. Such displacement leads to a rising demand for unemployment benefits and therefore places a significant strain on the government’s budget.
However, I would contend that the use of robotic technology is a net positive for society as it contributes to increased productivity. Robots can perform repetitive tasks significantly faster and more accurately than humans without the need for breaks, leading to higher output and improved product quality. The benefits of robots are most evident in the healthcare industry, where they are utilized to inspect vials to ensure that they are correctly sealed and contain the right dosage before distribution. Robots can also operate in hazardous environments to reduce the risks for humans. For instance, robots are deployed to remove highly radioactive waste that would have been deadly if exposed to humans.
In conclusion, despite the negative economic ramifications concomitant with robots, they are an indispensable part of societal future growth as it leads to higher levels of productivity. The government and companies globally should continue making substantial investments in developing robots to benefit society as a whole.
