Large companies use sports events to promote their products. Some people think it has a negative impact on sports. To what extent do you agree or disagree?
Many feel that sponsorship deals from large corporations can have a detrimental impact on sports. In my opinion, although these companies might advertise harmful products in sporting events, the money received from sponsors can be utilized to create greater tournaments, which is decidedly positive on the whole.
On the one hand, companies might promote unhealthy food and drinks to the masses. Sport organizers often prioritize profits over ethical considerations by allowing brands of sugary drinks or foods high in saturated fat and salt to be heavily advertised during events, which contradicts the spirit of health and fitness that sports promote. For example, McDonald’s is regularly featured in sporting events in the US, exposing children to junk food and increasing their risks of developing obesity. These sponsors might also limit freedom of expression as athletes are required to endorse their brands regardless of their opinions. During press conferences, athletes are prohibited from removing cans of Coca Cola on the table off camera and even obligated to take a sip while responding to reporters’ questions.
However, sponsorship deals contribute significantly to expanding the scale of sports tournaments. The large amount of sponsored money can be utilized to offer athletes and organizers high paychecks, making the industry more competitive and creating more jobs. The positive economic ramifications also extend to the tourism sector. For instance, countries that hosted the World Cup in the past have witnessed drastic economic development thanks to the influx of tourists paying for hotel stays, eating at restaurants and buying souvenirs. The money can also be used to engender the best possible experience for the audiences. Due to the large sponsorship deals that Super Bowl managed to secure, the event could hire world-famous artists such as Lady Gaga and Eminem to perform during their halftime shows, creating a memorable experience for all the fans.
In conclusion, despite the potential of harmful products being promoted to children, corporate sponsorship plays an instrumental role in boosting economic growth and allowing these events to be organized at larger scale. Consequently, its overall impact is unequivocally positive.
