To what extent do you agree or disagree?
Some believe that schools should administer standardized examinations to students. In my opinion, although these compulsory tests can support curriculums to a certain extent, they should no longer exist due to their unreliability in evaluating students’ academic performances.
Those in favor of standardized tests can point to their instrumental implications in developing better syllabuses. Periodic examinations can provide teachers with valuable insight into students’ current weaknesses and strengths and tailor their lessons and materials accordingly. For instance, if students’ scores of a given subject are below an expected average, school administrators can then make adjustments to ensure course content addresses real student needs. Improvements on study programs ranging from delivering more relevant materials to designing more interactive lessons can be made to stimulate students’ progress. Ideally, all students under an educational system greatly benefit from ongoing assessments as tests generate large-scale statistical results, facilitating the identification of areas for improvement.
Detractors of standardized testing argue its inability to accurately evaluate students’ true abilities. It is common for students in most parts of the world to suffer from stress and sickness, especially prior to high-stakes tests, typically resulting in poor performances that are not likely to reflect their actual capabilities. There is anecdotal evidence that the foreknowledge of evaluative tests predispose test-takers to experiencing headaches and anxieties and therefore lead to less satisfactory preparation and final marks. This persistent problem is generally further compounded by the irregularity of these examinations. A few poor test scores can undermine students’ overall studies and create a cycle involving stress and demotivation.
In conclusion, despite the consensus on positive ramifications associated with course improvement, standardized tests should be abolished as they regularly fail to provide accurate assessments. School boards and regulatory bodies should devise more effective evaluation tools to reliably determine student abilities.
