Study languages in secondary school

The bar chart illustrates the proportion of European secondary school students acquiring various languages in 1990, 2000, and 2010. From an overall perspective, it is readily apparent that English was by far the most popular language to learn in the years in question, while there was much less interest in German and Russian. The figures for English and Spanish learners witnessed upward trends, while the opposite patterns were recorded for those learning French and Spanish, while those of Russian remained fairly steady. 

Looking first at the most common language to acquire, English accounted for the majority of learners in 1990, at precisely 60%, followed distantly by French at 30%, and German at only 12%. Over the following twenty years, English maintained its dominance as its figure reached an all-time high of 80%, whereas there was a significant decline in French learners, which hit around 19% in 2010. Germany’s proportion, however, grew slightly to 17% in 2000, before falling to end at 10%.  

In terms of the statistics for Spanish and Russian learners, they were equal in 1990, with each making up roughly 5%. After twenty years, the figure for Spanish learners surged to finish at 25%, while that of Russian peaked at 10% and thereafter dipped back to the 1990 figure.
