The Table Shows how Many International Students Study in Canada and The United States by Country of Origin
The tables indicate the number of international students studying in Canada and the United States and the changes in percentage over a one-year period starting from 2002.
Looking from an overall perspective, it is readily apparent that the figures for all countries rose, with the exception of Indian students coming to the United States to study. Furthermore, the number of students going to the United States for education was considerably higher, while there was a more significant growth in proportions in Canada.
The number of Chinese students pursuing education in Canada registered the most significant increase in percentage, rising by 45% from 5,400 in 2002 to 7,850 in 2003, whereas in the USA, this figure climbed by only 6% to 116,600 in 2003. There were substantially fewer Indian students in Canada, accounting for 2,100 in 2002 and 2,835 in 2003, which recorded a growth of 35%. In contrast, the number of students coming from India in the USA experienced a decline of 9% from 200,000 to 182,000 during this period.
In Canada, the number of American students grew by 9% to 5,450 while Canadian students in the US witnessed a smaller increase of 7% to 33,170. The total number of international students living in Canada saw a more dramatic rise of 17% to 70,004 in 2003, while the US’s total figure only climbed by 2% to end at 592,230.
