Taking risks in life

It is important for people to take risks, in both their professional lives and personal lives.

Do the advantages of taking these risks outweigh the disadvantages?

Many feel that taking risks plays an instrumental role in personal and professional growth. In my opinion, although taking risks in one’s professional life can result in negative financial ramifications, this approach to life is the catalyst for meaningful self-improvement, which far outweighs any perceived drawbacks.

Detractors of taking risks typically point to the potential for negative financial implications. If an individual resigns a regular office job to seek higher-paying alternatives, they are at risk of a less stable income and therefore less comfortable lifestyle in the short-term. For example, those who leave a  safe nine-to-five job to start a company run the risk of bankruptcy.  The detrimental impact of taking unnecessary risks also extends to interpersonal relationships. This is especially true when one’s investment decisions are unknown to other family members, potentially resulting in distrust, bitter accusations, and discord.

However, these instances only apply to those taking unreasonable risks and are not realistic in the majority of contexts. In reality, taking calculated risks is crucial for self-development. By pursuing new and more challenging directions in life, individuals can engage in long-term planning, critical thinking, and develop problem-solving skills. The intangible benefits of this development are  best illustrated in the example of those running a start-up, which requires them to develop a varied skill set ranging from budgeting and marketing to  management and accounting. The positive impact of an adventurous mindset can be seen not only through taking significant career-related risks but also in small daily decisions. For instance, those pursuing new sporting activities can develop healthy habits to stay in shape.

In conclusion, despite the fact that taking risks can impair one’s finances and personal relationships, risk-taking in general can greatly contribute to a more fulfilling life, which is unequivocally positive on the whole. Individuals should consider reasonable risks in both their professional and personal lives to maximize their potential
