The increasing frequency of satellite launches and space debris is becoming a threat to the Earth.

What are the main causes of this?
What measures can be taken to address the issue?

The growing number of satellites and space debris orbiting the Earth has become an alarming problem. This phenomenon is largely a result of the increased demand for global connectivity and the structure of spacecrafts. The best fixes for this nascent problem involve considerable efforts on both national and international level.

One major factor contributing to the rise in space debris is how rockets are designed. When space rockets are launched, they release fuel tanks at a certain point above the Earth’s atmosphere to remove unnecessary weight, leaving a large chunk of debris to float in space each time. This debris remains in outer space and accumulates over time, inevitably resulting in collisions, and therefore creates even more space junks. This problem is further compounded by the fact that more satellites are required to meet the global need for communication. Recent statistics and research conducted have indicated that the collisions between satellites launched by the US, China, and Russia has left thousands of pieces of space junk to float aimlessly in the Earth’s orbit, obstructing future space missions.

However, governments can act separately and cooperatively to address this problem. Governments that conduct space missions should be responsible for the removal of all the space debris created by investing in and utilizing advanced space technology. A highly effective method for waste disposal in outer space is adopted by the European Space Agency, where robotic arms are successfully attached to a defunct satellite, destroying it. Efficient communication channels between countries also play an instrumental role in preventing collisions and accidents. For example, the positions of a given country’s satellites should always be updated for other nations’ ground controllers.

In conclusion, the increasing amount of space debris stems from technological advances and this problem can be addressed through international cooperation. Governments globally should take immediate drastic measures to ensure a sustainable environment conducive to space exploration for future generations.
