The table illustrates how many universities in different countries were listed in the global top 200 in various disciplines in 2011. Looking from an overall perspective, it is readily apparent that most prestigious universities were concentrated in the US and the UK, while the opposite was true for New Zealand. All countries recorded the highest number of universities specialized in Biology, except for Australia and Canada, where universities in Psychology were most common.
The USA recorded the greatest data for leading universities across all disciplines, with 69 institutions in Biology, 54 in Medicine, and 58 in Psychology. Significantly fewer universities in the UK were ranked top 200 in comparison, with the figure for universities in Biology being most notable at 30, followed by Psychology at 29, and lastly Medicine at 24. In contrast, New Zealand had the least top universities in all majors, recording 9 universities in Biology, 13 in Medicine and 17 in Psychology.
The numbers of top universities in Biology in Australia and Canada were equal, with each country having 9 institutions. In Medicine, both nations recorded comparable figures, with Australia accounting for 13 universities and Canada 12. Similarly, the gap in universities in Psychology was minimal, as Australia had 17 leading universities compared with 14 in Canada.
