The table below gives information about the average annual distance travelled by adults and the types of travel in 1977 and 2007
The table illustrates the number of miles travelled by adults using different means of transport in 1997 and 2007. From an overall perspective, it is readily apparent that the distance travelled by car, train, and taxi increased after ten years, whereas the opposite trends were registered for the remaining kinds of travel. It is also noteworthy that cars were by far the most used modes of transport in both years in question.
Looking first at the year 1997, the figures for miles travelled by bicycle and motorcycle were least significant and identical at 100, which was half that of taxis at 200. Cars were the most popular means of transport, representing a total of 3,500 miles, followed distantly by train, bus, and walking at 900, 800 and 400 miles, respectively.
Over the following decade, cars remained the most commonly used vehicle as the total miles travelled more than doubled to 7,100. Similarly, the data for miles travelled by train and taxi grew, with the former increasing more modestly to 1,000 and the latter to 800. Lastly, the distance travelled by walking, cycling, riding a motorbike and riding buses all declined, with their respective figures falling to 300, 80, 90, and 500.
