The chart below shows the percentage of water in UK rivers that was classified as having good chemical quality between 1990 and 2002.
The chart illustrates the proportions of rivers categorized as having high water quality over a period of 12 years starting from 1990. From an overall perspective, it is readily apparent that the figures for good quality rivers in Wales declined, whereas the opposite patterns were observed in Northern Ireland and Scotland, with England’s data witnessing significant fluctuations over the period in question. It is also noteworthy that Wales had the highest percentage of good quality rivers throughout, except for isolated periods from 1998 to 2002.
Looking first of all at Wales, nearly 100% of rivers in this region were of good quality, followed closely by Northern Ireland’s figure at around 84%. Both areas’ figures thereafter experienced upward trends, with the former growing gradually to 99% and the latter to 89% in 1998. Over the last four years, Wales’ figure suddenly dropped to finish at precisely 80%, whereas that of Northern Ireland spiked and surpassed Wales’ to reach the maximum percentage, before falling slightly to end at approximately 95%.
In terms of the figures for good quality rivers in the remaining regions, England began the period at 46%, considerably higher than Scotland’s initial figure of 21%. England’s figure subsequently displayed dramatic variations, hitting a peak of 70% in 1996 and a trough of 30% in 1998, before culminating at 50% in 2002. The trend for Scotland’s data, however, was more consistent, as its figure remained relatively stable at about 30% over the first six years, followed by a surge to 60% in 2000 and a final drop to 40% in 2002.
