University education should be free for all students.
Do you agree or disagree?
Some argue that tertiary education should be freely accessible to everyone. In my opinion, although free university education is likely to place a great financial strain / burden on taxpayers and make bachelor degrees less valuable, governments worldwide should adopt this policy due to the potential long-term benefits associated with a given country on the whole.
On the one hand, providing free university education for all students can impose a financial strain on taxpayers. This plan requires a significant amount of government spending and even reduces budgetary allocation towards other essential sectors such as healthcare and infrastructure. A pertinent example of this downside can be demonstrated in Sweden, where tuition-free universities have resulted in taxpayers bearing one of the highest income tax rates globally. A sharp rise in university enrollment may lead to the devaluation of academic degrees. When the job market becomes saturated with degree holders, employers might raise qualifications required for entry-level positions, contributing to heightened / increased competition and placing immense pressure on students to pursue even higher degrees.
However, I would contend that tertiary / higher education should be provided at no cost to students as it can greatly benefit a country’s economic growth / development / prosperity. If university education is offered for free, a greater number of individuals can receive advanced training across various fields, thereby contributing to the development of a more productive and dynamic labor force / workforce. For example, in Germany where universities charge little to no tuition, this educational system has engendered a large number of talented engineers, IT specialists / experts, healthcare professionals, driving innovation and sustaining one of the largest economies in the world. Free university education means that students do not have to go into debt and therefore do not have to worry about repayment. For instance, the extremely high tuition fees of American universities have led to many students piling up debts and struggling to repay them even years later.
In conclusion, although university education being provided free-of-charge can put great pressure on the general citizenry and the government budget, it can create a more efficient labor force and promote economic prosperity and therefore all governments should implement this policy.
