The line graph illustrates changes in the proportions of the US workforce employed in five different sectors between 1930 and 2010. From an overall perspective, it is readily apparent that farming, fishing and foresting experienced a dramatic decline in employment figures, despite being by far the largest sector at the beginning of the period. By contrast, the proportions of workers in the industrial and technical sectors increased considerably, with industrial employment becoming the largest category by 2010. The two remaining industries underwent moderate fluctuations.
In 1930, farming, fishing and forestry accounted for approximately 75% of the American workforce. This figure declined gradually to just under 60% in 1970 before falling more sharply to finst at noly 2% in 2010. On the contrary, industrial and technical employment started at a negligible level of 1% and 3%, respectively, in 1930. Both the statistics for industrial and technical workers thereafter grew moderately to converge at 9% in 1970, after which the latter continued its rise to end at 23% and the former spiked to culminate at 39%, surpassing all other categories.
Concerning the figures for individuals working in sales and office, and other services, both stood at precisely 10% in 1930. The proportion of sales and office workers initially fluctuated between approximately 2% and 12% before rising gradually to finish at 20% in 2010. The figure for other services, however, peaked at around 18% in 1940, after which it fell to approximately 10% and remained relatively stable at around this level for the rest of the period.
