The table illustrates the amount of time that full-time and part-time employees of both genders spent on working on average in 2002. Looking from an overall perspective, it is readily apparent that men worked longer hours than women in both types of employment in all countries in question, with the exception of the Netherlands. Men allocated slightly more time to their full-time jobs compared to their female counterparts in Europe, while the opposite was true concerning part-time jobs.
Regarding the statistics for full-time jobs, men in Greece worked longest hours at 42.5, with the Netherlands and the UK’s figures trailing slightly at 38 and 37.5, respectively. Women in Greece and the UK worked fewer hours in comparison with men, with the former accounting for 39.9 and the latter 37, whereas only the Netherlands recorded equal working hours for both men and women at 38. The European average for men was greater than women, representing a total of 40.4 and 39.2 hours, for each.
Looking at the figures for part-time jobs, men continued to work for longer in this category at 30 hours in Greece and 29 hours in the UK, while women were reported to work 29.3 and 28 hours, in turn. In contrast, the Netherlands was unique as this was the only country where women worked longer hours than men, with their respective figures being 29.2 and 28.3 hours. All of the aforementioned data were lower than the European average working hours at 34 for women and32 for men.
