The charts illustrate Australia’s trade values with three different countries from 2004 to 2009.
The charts demonstrate the value of Australia’s trade with various nations over a period of five years starting from 2004. Looking from an overall perspective, it is readily apparent that Australia generally imported more goods from China and the US than it exported, while the opposite pattern was true with Japan. The amount of goods that Australia imported and exported with China witnessed upward trends from 2004 to 2009, whereas these statistics in the US and Japan were relatively stable, with the exception of exports with Japan.
Looking first of all at Australia’s trade with China, the amount of goods imported was valued at precisely 20 billion dollars in 2004, nearly doubling that of exported goods at around 12 billion dollars. Imports and exports’ value both grew significantly, with the former ending at just under 30 billion dollars and the latter surpassing imports to finish at 33 billion dollars. Similarly, Australia’s imports with the US were higher than exports, accounting for 21 billion dollars and 9 million dollars, respectively. Both figures then demonstrated similar trajectories, with the value of imports rising marginally to 23 billion dollars and exports to 12 billion dollars before dipping to 22 billion dollars and 10 billion dollars, in turn.
In 2004, Australia recorded equal values of imports and exports with Japan at 20 billion dollars. The value of exports thereafter rose dramatically to 28 billion dollars in 2007 before soaring to 40 billion dollars in 2008 and plummeting to 30 billion dollars in 2009. In contrast, the value of imports remained relatively stable, reaching a high of 22 billion dollars in 2008 and then returning to the 2004 figure.
