The diagram illustrates the process involved in creating an igloo with snow. Looking from an overall perspective, it is readily apparent that there are a total of three main stages when it comes to constructing an igloo. These include sawing hard-packed snow, then building the exterior structure, and lastly forming the interior.
Initially, hard-packed snow is collected and sawn with a specialized tool in preparation for construction. The snow is thereafter utilized to establish the igloo’s foundation, which measures four meters in width and consists of solely small blocks. In the following step, rows of large snow blocks are placed on top of the base to form a dome-shaped structure with an opening at the top.
Next, a roof is used and fitted on top of the structure to complete the enclosure, which is two meters in height. Small gaps created during the building process are covered with loose snow, before a small entrance is dug into the igloo. Once builders drill air holes from inside the igloo to ensure adequate ventilation, the igloo is finally ready to be used as a shelter to keep occupants warm.
